REPROGRAMMING HP 4200 AND HP
P4014 SERIES FORMATTERS
The HP 4200/4300 series and HP P4014/4015/4515 series printers are chipped
or programmed at the factory to be certain models. Whether it is a base unit,
or a model with a resident or embedded network capabilities on the formatter.
Between the formatter and the DC controller these identities are shared, each
having a role in the identity of the printer. DC controllers are programmed or
chipped with the information required to be either a network or non-network
model. There is no difference in the part number’s either. When replacing one
it is crucial that you know from which model it came from. If you were to
replace a DC controller on a 4250N printer and you did not get a network model
DC controller your formatter would get re-programmed. If you were to follow the recommended
replacement procedure of leaving the printer on for 5 minutes after it came to
a “ready” state, you would see your network option there. But this 5 minute
procedure must be performed twice followed by a “cold reset”. At this point you
would look to configure your network and would discover that its not an option
that’s available. Thinking now that you
might have a bad formatter. You might order a replacement “N” model formatter.
Following the replacement procedures again, it would show up with the network option, but not after the second round. The good thing
about the 4200/4300 series formatter’s is that they can be reprogrammed over
and over if needed. These “N” model formatters could be installed in a another
true “N” model printer and following the same procedure, the network option
will be restored.
This is not the case with the
HP P 4014/4015/4515 series printer’s formatters. These are write once only.
Once they have taken on an identity,P4014/P4015/P4515 they cannot be changed.
If you were to order a new replacement from HP you would be able to install it
in your printer and it would assume its identity. There is only one part number
used for the formatter for all three models. If you were to order a refurbished
or recycled formatter it would have to be model specific as it will not be able
to be re-programmed when it is installed. These models DC controller’s are also
programmed to be network or non-network and cannot be changed or reprogrammed.
When replacing you must know its background, what model it came out of. The
wrong DC controller can de-program or take away your network option. This
option can be restored by again installing it a true “N” model printer.
Following the same “5 minutes after ready” procedure twice the network option
can be restored. The model number will not be affected or changed.
